The Hummingbird Project in Years 5 and 6

Year 5 and Year 6 are currently taking part in The Hummingbird Project , which is a six week Positive Education intervention.  The Project is designed to give pupils the tools they need to be as happy, healthy, and productive as possible.  So far the children have taken part in workshops about happiness, mindfulness, gratitude, kindness, character strengths, and resilience. These include fun activities that help them to understand how to put these ideas into practice and, most importantly, help them to  feel good about the future.

Winter Reading Challenge

After our very successful October reading challenge, the Reading Ambassadors have set a new one. Please complete a book review on one of your favourite books using the template which will be sent home. Please hand in your completed book review to your teacher by Friday 20th January for the chance of winning a prize. The best book reviews will be sent to Tameside Libraries who will display them on their Twitter feed.

I can't wait to find out which books you have all been reading!

Miss Harvey and the Reading Ambassadors

Where's Wally Challenge

The Reading Ambassadors have hidden Wally around the school. If you find a Wally on the wall take him off and hand it to your teacher to win a certificate from Miss Harvey.

Can you spot Wally?

Basketball in year 6

Year 6 have been practising different basketball techniques over the last couple of weeks. We have looked at using a chest pass, bounce pass and overhead pass. We have practised different dribbling skills and how to pivot when passing in a different direction. We have started to play mini matches which we really enjoyed yesterday.

Y6 Star of the week 2-12-22

Congratulations to Sam and all of year 6 this week for being our stars of the week.

The whole class were so impressive during our evolution workshop this week. I am so proud of how much you have remembered and for your enthusiasm during the workshop.

Sam asked some thoughtful questions and really immersed himself in the workshop - I could tell how much you enjoyed this Sam.

Lucy won our Handwriting Award this half term- she has been working really hard in her additional handwriting lessons to write more fluent, joined-up writing. Keep this up Lucy.

Fractions Game

We have been adding and subtracting mixed numbers in our fractions learning. Today we played Connect 4 to revise our knowledge and get 4 correct answers in a row.

Evolution Workshop part 2

We loved getting our hands on the fossils yesterday in our workshop. We became naturalists: classifying, measuring, sorting and counting the fossils in various ways. The megalodon tooth and mammoth hair were fascinating. We were not too sure about the coprolite- dinosaur poo!

Thank you so much to Mr Birchall and his son from Balestra Workshops for such a fun, informative day!

Evolution Workshop- part 1

What a jam-packed morning we have had in year 6. We have looked at the theory of evolution by natural selection and discussed how animals. including humans, have evolved. We played a game of 'survival of the fittest'. We revised the scientific names for part of the skeleton and discovered we could fir approximately 7 bean bags into a human skull. We took part in some circuit activities to look at how humans have stamina- which makes us different from apes.

We can't wait to be palaeontologists this afternoon exploring fossils.
