Coding with Scratch

This term Year 6 have been practising their coding skills on Scratch. We have explored how to set variables up in different ways to create score boards and timers. We have started to create our own games with falling sprites. The children have to code each sprite to fall in different ways so that the player can catch points or avoid sprites which deduct points.

We are hoping to get other children to review our games for us.

Penny Joelson Workshop

As part of the Tameside Ready, Steady Read festival, year 6 joined a zoom meeting with children's author Penny Joelson today. This was really inspiring and informative as we not only found out about some of Penny's stories, but she also discussed how she became an author. Penny has written books including 'Tell no secrets' which is about a child with cerebral palsy who cannot tell anyone that she saw a murder! She also wrote 'Girl in the window' in which a child witnesses somebody dragging a woman into a car and notices a young girl's face in the window opposite who has seen it too.

Children's Mental Health Week

Alongside our work on Internet Safety this week, Year 6 have also looked at Children's Mental Health Week. We have looked at loneliness and how to make connections with people, especially when transitioning to high school later this year. We have talked about our mental health generally thinking of strategies to keep our minds healthy. We have looked at showing kindness to others- we created our own kindness poems using the senses.

Well done Year 6!

Safer Internet Day 2023

This week we have celebrated Safer Internet Day 2023 in various ways in Year 6. We took part in a live assembly on Tuesday to start our thoughts about how to keep safe online. In our lessons we have discussed how we all use the internet for various reasons. We have discussed the positives of the internet whilst also looking at the potential dangers. The children were good at spotting red flag scenarios that they may come across online. The children enjoyed making fun chatterboxes with some questions to ask their friends about E-safety.

Internet Legend Assembly

Broadbent Fold watched a live online assembly today 7th February 2023- An Internet Legends Assembly. Children were encouraged to used their critical thinking skills when online.Remember 'Be kind online' and make time to have conversations about being online.

What type of password is a strong password to use? What should you do if you see something unkind online?

This week children are taking part in lessons about online safety.

The theme for 2023 is, 'Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online'.

Big Battery Hunt

The Eco leaders have given out boxes to children in their class so that they can collect batteries for recycling.  If your child did not bring a box home the used batteries can be brought into school in a plastic bag. The bags and boxes can be handed to the eco leaders in your child's class and they will bring them to me.  We are only collecting these used batteries: AAA  AA  C  D  The batteries that we collect will be recycled to make new batteries, used in the construction industry and they can even be made into fertilizer!  Please don't throw your old batteries away.  Ov

Y6 Star of the week 3-2-23

Congratulations to our Stars of the Week Pasha and Henry.

Pasha has been working hard in class this week and he is putting a lot of effort into his home learning. I was impressed with his Viking biography which he completed for homework this week.

Henry has really worked hard in science this week and has accurately remembered lots of knowledge about the circulatory system.

Well done to our Good to be Green Award winners Sam and Evan.
