Year 5 - Spring Term - Why should the world's rainforests matter to all of us?

Welcome back to Spring Term in Year 5 where our topic will test the children's geographical knowledge of the world and make them aware of the impact of climate change.  In our topic "Why should the world's rainforests matter to all of us?", we will learn more about Greta Thunberg and her efforts to save our planet, as well as researching endangered animals via the WWF.   Persuasive Writing is on the agenda in our English lessons, as well as reading the award winning novel "The Explorer" by Katherine Rundell, about four children who find themselves stranded in the Amazon Rainforest!  Year 5 will also study the work of the artist Henri Rousseau and create their own, jungle style artwork.

PE this term will be on Tuesdays and Fridays (Gymnastics and OAA) so please ensure that both indoor and outdoor kits are in school.  Have a look at our Medium Term Plan below for this topic where you will find other activities planned for all areas of the curriculum.  You will also find the Challenge Home Learning grid for Year 5 which contains activities to complete at home if your child wishes to do something extra, together with details of this half term's Creative Homework project.  The children will be working on this in class before beginning their presentations.

Crumble Coding computing workshop has been booked to take place on Monday 22nd January.  This will provide the opportunity for children to learn about "wearable tech", when they will design and make their own piece of wearable equipment that lights up or makes a noise!

Thank you for all your support last half term - the children are working hard in Year 5 and making good steps in their learning.  Miss Wagstaff will be with us for a few more weeks to ensure continuity.  The office will be organising Parent Partnership meetings by telephone with myself shortly so look out for the invitation on arbor. I look forward to speaking to you then!
