Mathematics offers children a powerful way of communicating. They learn to explore and explain their ideas using symbols, diagrams and spoken and written language.  Studying mathematics stimulates curiosity, fosters creativity and equips children with the skills they need in life beyond school. 

At Broadbent Fold Primary School and Nursery, we aim to develop motivated and resilient mathematicians who can be fluent in the fundamentals of maths and confidently apply what they learn. Most of all, we want children to enjoy maths and to get excited about the challenges the subject can bring. It is important to us that children see the relevance of maths and why it is needed in life, including in unfamiliar contexts and real-life scenarios. Children need to be able to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, presenting a justification or argument using mathematical language. 

At Broadbent Fold we:

  • - apply the teaching for mastery principles across school
  • - expose all our children to fluency, reasoning and problem solving frequently and consistently across a unit of work
  • - recap the learning content daily to keep learning warm
  • - consistently and regularly develop arithmetic skills and knowledge 
  • - believe that learning is not fixed and 'everyone can'. 
  • - use timely intervention to address misconceptions.  

The White Rose Maths schemes of learning are designed to give sufficient time for teachers to explore and understand concepts in depth, rather than covering it superficially and then returning several times. This practice and consolidation helps children to grasp the links between topics and to understand them more deeply.

We work with Maths Mastery:

Mastering maths means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths. Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material. https://www.ncetm.org.uk/teaching-for-mastery/mastery-explained/

Interventions - Any child who is beginning to fall behind, is quickly identified and supported. Current interventions include; Dynamo Maths, group gap focus and 1:1 tutoring. 

Recovery Curriculum - Due to the Covid-19 situation, we have amended and adapted our plans for 2021-2022. As a result of the disruption to education, any non-secure gaps have been identified from formal and informal assessment and built into planning for this academic year in order to enable children to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge for the next steps in their learning. 

Assessment - We assess mathematics using the White Rose end of unit assessments. These support our planning and next steps. We also use NFER end of term assessments, which support our teacher judgements. We work closely with a cluster of schools to quality assure our decisions and we support each other on driving standards further.
