Welcome back to Summer 2! This half term, Year 5 will be exploring our exciting geography topic, “What makes South America a continent of contrasts?”. The children will develop their understanding of South America by learning about its physical and human geography, including the differences between rich and poor areas, climate, landscapes and life in Brazil.
As part of our English learning, we will be reading our class text, Trash by Andy Mulligan. Inspired by the novel, the children will write a biography based on the main character, Raphael Fernandez, and explore what life is like growing up on a dumpsite. To deepen our understanding further, we will also watch the documentary FYI: Caught in the Crossfire, where the children will learn about the darker side of life in Brazil. We are especially excited to watch a Q&A session with Brayden, who presented the documentary at just 11 years old.
Year 5 are also incredibly excited for their One Adventure Sleepover, which will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of July. This promises to be a fantastic experience filled with teamwork, resilience and unforgettable memories as we celebrate the end of a brilliant year together!
Forest School is on Mondays; PE is on Tuesdays (Athletics), and Thursdays (Tennis).
Have a look at our Class Blog to view the Medium-Term Plan for this topic, where you will find other activities planned for all areas of the curriculum. You will also find this term’s Creative Homework project. We always enjoy seeing the children’s efforts, so please do keep sharing their wonderful work!
Homework (Thursdays)
Weekly homework task
There will be a weekly homework task set in your child’s homework book. Please complete this ready for every Thursday. We will go through the homework together as a class to review and consolidate learning.
Spellings
A spelling sheet will be handed out to your child every two weeks, which will be stuck in their homework book, to practice if they need to. A spelling test will be followed up on every second Thursday.
Reading
Please read a few times a week and record it in your child’s reading diary. An adult is required to sign it for acknowledgement.
