This half term we will be learning all about The Rainforest. The children will learn about different rainforests around the world, animals and plants found in the rainforest and we will be reading lots of stories about the rainforest. This half term will be lots of fun and we might even see some "real" rainforest animals!!!!!!
Year 4 had a wonderful time singing, dancing and performing alongside the Halle at The Bridgewater Hall.
It all started when Year 5 decided to write to our lovely "Toast Ladies" to thank them for their very kind efforts in making toast every Frday for the whole school. From the proceeds of the toast, each class had been given a budget to re-vamp their Reading Corner with new books and accessories. Year 5 chose very wisely - books from their favourite authors, such as David Walliams and Jeff Kinney, together with a much needed bookcase and a furry rug to make the corner more cosy.
Year 5 managed to fit lots of activities into their Anglo Saxon topic. Firstly, as a homework task, the whole class made their own Anglo Saxon houses. These were fantastic! They then created three Anglo Saxon settlements by using lots of natural materials, such as twigs and grass, together with air clay models of people, boats and animals. Through excellent teamwork and sharing their ideas the end results were extremely impressive; you can see these on display around the school.
This week we have been investigating the work of Andy Goldsworthy who is an amazing sculpture artist that uses natural materials to create his art work. We also collected natural materials at home and around school and then in pairs we created our own fantastic pieces of art. Ms Thornton Jones was very impressed with our work!
In art we have been investigating different types of sculpture. Today we made our own animal sculptures with air drying clay. We made animals that you would find in our local environment. They look amazing!
We have been exploring the characters in the story of the Gruffalo by doing hot seating. The children took on the roles of the characters and asked eachother questions. We then wrote character descriptions and even wrote our own stories based on the story of the Gruffalo.
A huge thanks to Natalie's family for arranging a family friend, from South Africa, to skype Year 4.
We listened to Jennifer, a lady from a nature reserve in South Africa, who told us all about habitiats. We then asked her questions such as:
Do you feed the animals?
How many animals are there?
Are you scared of the animals?
A wonderful experience was had by all.
