Year 5 Blog

Sssssh! Spies are in Year 5!

Year 5 are enjoying their latest topic - Spies!  So far their missions have included making spy moves in PE, researching real and fictional spies and using a cipher wheel to crack codes.  When a mysterious man delivered a briefcase full of interesting items (which we cannot reveal) Year 5 found themselves suddenly immersed into a real mystery with a problem to solve. Watch this space!  Mrs Blomeley

Year 5 Apprentices!

Year 5 travelled back in time to the Victorian age when they visited Quarry Bank Mill in Styal on 20th October.  Dressed in clothes of the Victorian period, the children arrived at Apprentice House and stepped right into a school lesson!   Handwriting on chalkboards, calling the very strict Mistress "Maam" and learning about some scary medical procedures of the time (such as bloodsucking leeches!) made Year 5 realise just how lucky they are to live in 2017!

Cupboard Catastrophe!

Year 5 had an opportunity to use their science skills today!  Our Site Manager, Mr Higham, brought a box into Year 5 this morning.  He seemed a little cross and explained that several containers of different materials had fallen out of the science cupboard last night and scattered everywhere!  Mr Higham had tried to help but actually made things worse by sweeping up all the remains, including the odd dead spider, and putting the mixture into the box!  Year 5 were on the case straight away and used their scientific knowledge and different pieces of equipment to separate the diff

Hot Seating and Hopscotching Victorians!

Year 5 have been empathising with Victorian children in different ways lately!  In PE sessions they have been recreating Victorian playground games such as "London Bridge is Falling Down" and Hopscotch!  In class they have been answering questions in their roles as eye-witnesses to a fatal flood down the pit. Their thoughtful answers have helped the class to write some fantastic newspaper reports about the disaster. Great work Year 5!  Mrs Blomeley

Year 5 go back in time!

Year 5's enthusiasm for our Victorian topic is amazing!  So far they have written diaries to empathise with the miserable life of a workhouse child and used "Hot Seating" to question children who have taken on the role of one of these poor characters.  We will be going back in time to the Victorian period when we visit Quarry Bank Mill next month.  There, the children will be invited to work as apprentices, and discover what life was really like for children in those times.   I am looking forward to a great year ahead with Year 5!   Mrs Blomeley

Year 5 in the Dragons' Den!

A group from Year 5 were chosen to attend the annual Enterprise Event at Ravensfield last week with their brilliant invention, The LOGO MOTIVE game!  Following their successful Bikeability training, the group invented a game that involved road safety signs and fun logos from shops, restaurants and the internet.  It was brilliant and they delivered their presentation with great confidence!  Sadly, they were pipped at the post by another school, but we will return next year to try again!      Very well done to everyone!  Mrs Blomeley

Bikeability!

Year 5 spent four mornings with the Bikeability team to gain their Bikeability awards! Bikeability is a cycle training programme which is about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads. Being safe on the roads is crucial!  Even the terrible rain on the first day did not dishearten Year 5 - they carried on regardless - and should be extremely proud that they achieved their Level 1 and Level 2 awards.  Well done!

Year 5 Sports Week and Healthy Eating!

Even though the rain meant that Sports Day was postponed, Year 5 enjoyed some different indoor activities during Sports Week:  Zumba in the classroom, Yoga in the Hall and making delicious fruit kebabs following their healthy eating topic!   Mrs Blomeley

Year 5's River Studies Trip!

What a great day Year 5 had on their River Studies trip to Park Bridge!  Even the morning rain didn't spoil their enthusiasm!  The class were able to see for themselves different parts of a river they had been learning about in class.  They saw an example of a meander, a weir and a culvert.  They also found lots of plants around the river and evidence of different types of seed dispersal.  During our afternoon activity IN the river,  the children found some interesting mini-beasts (these can demonstrate just how clean the river is)  as well as timing the speed of the river flow.

Rivers and Mountains!

Year 5 are looking forward to their last topic in Year 5 - Rivers and Mountains!  They have lots of interesting questions to be answered and are looking forward to learning about some of the famous rivers and different mountain ranges around the world.  Mrs Blomeley
