World Book Day - Readathon!

We had a fantastic time reading yesterday to celebrate World Book Day!  As always, a great effort was made by the children to dress up as their favourite book characters.  These included Where's Wally?, The Demon Dentist, Gangsta Granny and Horrid Henry together with Alex Rider, Mr Stink and The Astounding Broccoli Boy!  Year 5 loved the opportunity of reading in our transformed, cosy hall with the parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and lunchtime supervisors who volunteered their time to join us.  The Readathon was a great success!  Thank you everyone!  Mrs Blomeley

Homework Houses - Anglo-Saxon style!

Year 5 have excelled themselves with their latest homework project - to build a model Anglo-Saxon house.  Using the knowledge they have learnt so far about this period in history, every child has recreated a typical dwelling for an ordinary Anglo-Saxon using natural materials.  The results are fantastic; the children (with a little help from their parents!) have clearly enjoyed this task.  Their next step is to create Anglo-Saxon settlements where the houses will be displayed. Stars, Solar System and Aliens in Year 5!

To complete their science topic on the Earth and the Solar System,  Year 5 were treated to an informative and exciting presentation from a visitor to the school last week.  Mr Graham Schofield, who is an astronomy expert and enthusiast,  brought along his telescopes for the class to look at.  He also hosted a question and answer session about the mysteries of our Solar System and beyond!  Mr Schofield was extremely impressed by Year 5's knowledge and their sensible enquiries.  They discussed whether there is life on other planets and, if so, what these aliens might look like!  As you will s

Healthy Teaching and Learning in Year 5 and Year 3!

Using resources loaned from the NHS Foundation Trust (Be Well Tameside), Mrs Anson delivered an important lesson to Year 5 on nutrition and how to look after your teeth.  Following the lesson the class visited Year 3 to share their knowledge.  Both classes enjoyed the activity and some fantastic learning took place.  It sees we have some budding health advisors and dentists in our school!  Well done everyone!  Mrs Blomeley

Miss Laitl presents Poland!

Miss Laitl from Key Stage 1 gave a presentation to Year 5 this week about her homeland, Poland.  We found out about the population, the different districts within the country and that the diverse landscapes in Poland include mountains, beaches and even a desert!  We discovered that Polish buildings are colourful and there are lots of beautiful churches there.

Space in the Playground!

Year 5's new Science Topic is Earth and the Solar System and they are learning ways to remember all of the planets.  Their task today was to create chalk pictures of the planets on the playground, making sure they were drawn to scale and placed in their position in relation to the Sun.  Most children helped to create the Sun and each group put a great deal of effort into making the planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.   Well done Year 5!  Mrs Blomeley

RE Week in Year 5

Year 5 have enjoyed a variety of activites during RE Week.  They were introduced to a new way of telling the Nativity story from our Holy Trinity Church visitors, as well as watching a traditional Nativity play in school, performed by our very talented Nursery and Reception children.  In class,  Year 5 learnt about various religious symbols and looked at examples of stained glass windows.  They went on to design some of their own and had the opportunity to see some beautiful real stained glass windows when they visited The Old Chapel in Dukinfield.  Our visitor Imran taught us the Muslim ri

Sssssh! Spies are in Year 5!

Year 5 are enjoying their latest topic - Spies!  So far their missions have included making spy moves in PE, researching real and fictional spies and using a cipher wheel to crack codes.  When a mysterious man delivered a briefcase full of interesting items (which we cannot reveal) Year 5 found themselves suddenly immersed into a real mystery with a problem to solve. Watch this space!  Mrs Blomeley

Year 5 Apprentices!

Year 5 travelled back in time to the Victorian age when they visited Quarry Bank Mill in Styal on 20th October.  Dressed in clothes of the Victorian period, the children arrived at Apprentice House and stepped right into a school lesson!   Handwriting on chalkboards, calling the very strict Mistress "Maam" and learning about some scary medical procedures of the time (such as bloodsucking leeches!) made Year 5 realise just how lucky they are to live in 2017!

Cupboard Catastrophe!

Year 5 had an opportunity to use their science skills today!  Our Site Manager, Mr Higham, brought a box into Year 5 this morning.  He seemed a little cross and explained that several containers of different materials had fallen out of the science cupboard last night and scattered everywhere!  Mr Higham had tried to help but actually made things worse by sweeping up all the remains, including the odd dead spider, and putting the mixture into the box!  Year 5 were on the case straight away and used their scientific knowledge and different pieces of equipment to separate the diff
