River Studies Trip to Park Bridge!

It was such a perfect summer's day for Year 5's visit to Park Bridge!  The weather was beautiful and the class were able to see for themselves some of the parts of a river they had been learning about in class.   We saw an example of a meander, a weir and a culvert (a structure that allows water to flow under a road).   We also found lots of plants around the river and evidence of different types of seed dispersal.  In our afternoon activity, that actually took place IN the river, the children found some interesting mini-beasts as well as timing the speed of the river flow.

Health, Well-being and Music with Manchester Camerata!

On Friday, Year 5 were treated to a visit by members from Manchester Camerata!  They have been described as "Probably Britain's most adventurous orchestra" so it was a real privilege to work alongside these practitioners.  Based on the important issue of health and well-being, the children were enouraged to learn through music, using their literacy skills and creativity.  Year 5 focused on the consequences of not getting enough sleep; they wrote and performed new verses to the "Sleep Song", as well as learning some facts and useful tips on how to get a good night's sleep!

Sport and Geography Week!

What an amazing week we all had!  Year 5 enjoyed the many different sporting activities on offer, combined with learning geographical facts about Germany, their chosen country from the FIFA World Cup squad.  We started each day with Wake Up, Shape Up and activities during the week included skipping, orienteering, fitness circuit, cross country, Zumba and dance.  The week ended with the Playground Soccer Challenge on Friday which was great fun and for such a worthy cause.  Thank you for all your kind donations to Soccer Aid.

Spanish Fun!

Year 5 had a fabulous two days of Spanish before they finished for the May half term holiday.  They investigated Mexico, the largest Spanish speaking country in the world, and created Mexican flags, Maracas and some beautifully coloured "Day of the Dead" masks.  They enjoyed learning Flamenco moves, playing their favourite game Policia, Policia and, a big favourite, making delicious Guacamole!  Thank you Senora Buckley!

Smoothie Makers in Year 5!

When our new caterers, Mellors, asked for volunteers to make smoothies, Year 5 jumped at the chance!  Everyone had a go on the Smoothie Bicycle to create delicious fruit smoothies; they also enjoyed sampling them afterwards!   Mrs Blomeley

Fabulous Friday - Flying Kites !

To celebrate the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Year 5 made kites in class.  The real fun though was getting to fly them on the field with the rest of the school! What a fantastic time we all had!

Keeping Fit in Year 5 - running the Daily Mile and Parkour!

Last week Year 5 were able to try out a new sport called Parkour!  Everyone enjoyed the activities which included jumping from different heights, balancing on pipes, rolling down slopes and generally keeping moving the whole time!  It was exhausting but so much fun; the coaches said we were all amazing!  We also began the Daily Mile Challenge  - twenty laps of the playground each day!   In just one week we have improved our time and each day we are aiming to beat our personal bests.         Keep up the great work Year 5!

Learning Leaders teach teeth!

Following the fascinating find of a sheep's skull during the Easter holidays, some children from Year 5 shared this amazing example with Year 3 to support their learning on teeth  The Year 5 Learning Leaders asked questions to their younger school friends who were able to inspect (first hand) a real example of molars that belonged to this plant eating herbivore. Great job!  Mrs Blomeley

Kensuke's Kingdom - Year 5's dilemma!

A mysterious parcel arrived containing, amongst other things, a faded football, a variety of shells and pebbles, a cryptic message in a bottle and a letter from “Michael” asking for advice.  Year 5 have already discovered that the story is none other than Michael Morpurgo’s Kensuke’s Kingdom and they are waiting for the story to unfold to identify the contents of the box  .....   Mrs Blomeley

"Marbellous" Marble Run!

What a fantastic time everybody had at our family activity this week!  Staff and children are still talking about the fun they had in their attempts to make the most creative marble run. Quotes fom the childen included "It was a lot of trial and error but worth it in the end!"  "My favourite part was building the different components!"  "I thought today was awesome because everyone worked as a team with a smile."  Mrs Anson, our expert scientist, reported "My group showed great determination and ingenuity.
