Year 5 2024-2025

Welcome back to Summer Term 1 in Year 5, where our topic revolves around History , namely "Who were the Anglo Saxons?"   Pupils will learn about the Anglo Saxons by using role play and activities to empathise with the lives of Anglo Saxon children.  Using Beowulf, a book based on the oldest surviving epic in British literature, the children will discover how story telling was passed down through the ages. Reading the non-fiction text “Explore Anglo Saxons” will explain how this ancient civilisation have influenced the way we live today. In a planned school Anglo Saxon Day, they will engage in activities from that period, such as weaving, jewellery making, baking and shield formation, using their own shields.    In class, they will become detectives to engage in a hands on activity to discover the secret of the bodiless burial at Sutton Hoo.

PE this term will be on Wednesdays and Fridays (Football and Rounders).  As always, please ensure that both indoor and outdoor kits are in school.

I will continue to set homework online each week for Mathletics.  This will link to the units of work we do in class.  I will also set activities on Seesaw.  Please encourage your child to read as often as possible at home, making sure they take into account the punctuation included in their text.  Reading books can be changed at any time and we also have Library books which can be changed each Thursday afternoon by our Reading Ambassadors.

Thank you for your continued support.  Year 5 are so eager to learn and this topic will provide many opportunities for them to engage in this important time in British history.  I am looking forward to the term ahead and to meeting you again at one of the planned Parents Evenings at the end of April!
