The Bog Baby

The Bog Baby

This week, we had a special visitor arrive in our classroom. Miss Wright had been on a walk through the woods at the weekend and through the crunchy autumn leaves, she found a Bog Baby! Miss Wright decided to bring him to school in a jar and share him with us; we all fell in love! We had a chat about whether we thought Miss Wright did the right thing in taking him from the wild and putting him in a jar, some of us said that is wasn't very fair because he was away from his family and friends. Miss Wright shared her favourite story, 'The Bog Baby' with us and we heard about two children taking a Bog Baby home too. They tried their best to look after him by making him a new home in a bucket and feeding him cake crumbs but Bog Baby started to feel poorly. The children shared their ideas about why we think Bog Baby became so sick; maybe he was lonely, cake crumbs are not healthy so maybe that made him sick or maybe it was because he didn't have the green bog water from the woods! The children really felt that it was unfair on the Bog Baby and as we read the ending of the story we heard about how even though the children loved him, they had to do what was best for him. The last pages showed us how happy Bog baby was when he returned home and that was because he had everything he needed to be happy and healthy. Miss Wright then told us that we have the right to all of those things too; a home to help us feel safe, appropriate clothing depending on the weather and food that keeps us healthy and strong as we grow. We used our book as a start to our Rights Respecting Schools Award and we shared our learning with the rest of the school in assembly. Miss Wright and Miss Laitl were very proud of us and we were very proud of ourselves too!
